Drogue Parachutes
Choosing the optimal drogue chute for your rocket, drone, or high-performance vehicle can be challenging. Factors such as packing volume, expected deployment velocity, and overall mission profile all play critical roles in determining the correct parachute. In many cases, the drogue chute is even more important than the main parachute. If a drogue fails or tears during a high-speed deployment, the vehicle may descend faster than expected, potentially overloading—and ultimately destroying—the main parachute during its own deployment sequence.
This is why selecting a high-quality, purpose-built drogue chute is essential. Rather than relying on whatever comes with a kit or whatever happens to be available, it’s vital to choose a chute engineered to survive extreme aerodynamic forces repeatedly, not just once.
Our Four Drogue Chute Options
We offer four types of drogue parachutes, arranged below from standard-duty to extreme-duty needs:
-
Elliptical Drogue Parachutes
-
Pro Experimental (Pro Ex) Drogue Chutes
-
Kevlar Drogue Parachutes
-
Ballistic Nylon Drogue Parachutes
When sizing a drogue chute, we generally recommend a descent rate of 75–90 fps. This helps prevent excessive stress on the main parachute during deployment.
Elliptical Drogue Parachutes
Our Elliptical Chutes are an excellent choice for deployments below ~125 fps. They pack very small, include a swivel on the bridle, and feature attractive multicolor patterns. While these are our simplest drogues, they remain durable, economical, and reliable for standard launch profiles. Smaller sizes (1–4 ft) are typically single-color on other chute types, making the Elliptical a visually appealing option as well.
Pro Experimental (Pro Ex) Drogue Chutes
The Pro Ex line is our most widely used drogue class and is engineered specifically for consistent, repeatable performance in high-power rocketry. These canopies feature:
-
Heavy seam reinforcement for high-cycle survivability
-
3/8" high-strength suspension lines
-
A top-mounted attachment loop for flame shields and deployment bags
-
Construction from our aerospace-grade 1.9 oz ripstop nylon
-
Compact stowage volume for tight bays
