These are some pictures I have of my 1/3.5 scale Razamov-Shtern LRD-D-1 I built this rocket with the help of the scale drawings in Pete Alway's book "Retro Rockets" . It is a 4" airframe , 8" long , with a 1 3/4" tailcone. It has a 38 mm mount 6 3/4" long which barely fits the case. There is 3" of "space" if front of the last centering ring. Just enough to get the shoulder of the nose cone down into. The overall height is about 35". The parachute is 36" and the cord is 1/2 " tubular nylon , 20+ feet of it. The rocket weighs right at 5 pounds at take off. About 3 pounds of that is the lead bird shot and epoxy, required in the nose cone for stability. Not a great deal of prep space here. The nose cone is a LOC standard 3.9". The "scale tip" has been dipped about 10 or 12 cycles in Epoxy. The excess build up was then filed and sanded down with a Dremel tool until the nose detail was shaped. The fins "started" as 7 PLY 1/2" para plywood. The "sharp" leading edges were put on the fins with a belt sander and "LOTS" of time. They are sharp enough as to be very uncomfortable if the LCO is a slowpoke. The fins go through the wall to the motor mount and are attached to the entire length of the airframe. Each fin sweeps back from the rocket 14". I should have called the damn thing "hey, look at that silver space rocket" that's what everyone calls it anyway! I built the rocket to fly on H-242 Blue Thunder motors. And they really kick it off the pad too! The pictures here are from it's second flight on H-242 BT power. The photos are by BILL DAUPHIN and were taken at one of our TARA (Tripoli Atlanta) events last year , the MICK WILKINS MEMORIAL SPORT SCALE MEET 97, March 1997.(MWMSSM97 to us) The "LRD" won 2nd place in the HIGH POWER sport scale division sponsored by TARA. The rocket has also flown at LDRS 16, and is still with us. This year we're having TWO HIGH POWER sport scale events , "H&I AND J& above" I'm making a 10" version of this for the MWMSSM 98 this year,6' tall, 24" of nose cone, 54mm mount. on a K-550 ,for my level 2 certification, I HOPE! |
